An ambulance service spokeswoman said the 44-year-old man suffered deep wounds to his leg as he surfed off Redhead Beach, near Newcastle, north of Sydney. north avoca shark attack,

"He's currently in a serious condition and will be transported to John Hunter Hospital."

It is the second attack in as many weeks in waters off Sydney.

On January 4 another surfer was bitten on the arm by a shark off North Avoca beach.

And in December a man narrowly escaped serious injury when a shark rammed his board and bit a huge chunk off it near the village of Angourie, further up the east coast.

Fatal attacks are rare in Australia with just 27 people killed in the past 22 years.

South Africa is one of the world's deadliest places for shark attacks.

Swimmer Lungisani Msungubana, 25, from the Transkei region, was killed while bathing at Second Beach in the rural Eastern Cape on Sunday.

It is thought a bull, or Zambezi, shark was also responsible for his death.
