Colorado Dentist And HIV Risk - A Colorado dentist and oral surgeon put his patients at risk for contracting HIV and hepatitis due to unsafe injection practices, and state officials are set to notify patients who saw Dr. Stephen Stein over a 12-year period to inform them of their risk.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment stressed that “there have been no infections linked” to the offices of Dr. Stein, who practiced oral surgery in Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Denver.
The state said patients who received IV medications, including sedation, at Dr. Stein’s offices “may have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B and/or hepatitits C.”
State officials learned of the HIV risk the dentist may have exposed his patients to following a report of unsafe injection practices at his offices.
“Upon investigation, it was determined syringes and needles used to inject medications through patients’ IV lines were saved and used again to inject medications through other patients’ IV lines,” the agency said in a statement. “This practice has been known to transmit infections.”

Over 33 Million People Worldwide Living With HIV/AIDS
Over 33 Million People Worldwide Living With HIV/AIDS, The idea behind National HIV Testing Day isn’t that everyone run out on their lunch break and get tested. (Of course, no one in the HIV prevention and treatment community would complain if that did happen.) Chances are good that the most at risk populations – young, lower income minorities – don’t enjoy the luxury of a lunch break long enough to “drop in.”
But that excuse isn’t flying with HIV prevention professionals, who will be on hand Wednesday to offer free tests and counseling at community centers and clinics around the country. Breast milk blocks HIV transmission in mice, study finds,
Of the estimated 33 million people living with HIV worldwide, less than 20 percent of them know they are infected. Those that do know their status are likelier to seek the appropriate amount of care and support, prevention advocates say.
“Testing really is the starting point of letting people live healthier lives,” says Dr. Jonathan Mermin of the Centers for Disease Control. “The latest generation of tests detect the presence of the virus at the time (those already infected) are most likely to be infectious.”
In other words, early detection is paramount in populations that might otherwise take a test dangerously close to a full-blown AIDS diagnosis. Breast milk blocks HIV transmission in mice, study finds,
With the prevalence of HIV among African American men and women much higher than previously believed, advocates are stressing the need for more frequent testing and for a wider range of testing options.
“We should not lose sight of the fact that you can’t get treated for HIV if you don’t know that you have it,” said Phill Wilson, president of the Black AIDS Institute. “It has never been easier.”
The CDC on Tuesday announced plans to make home testing kits available at pharmacies and retail stores nationwide.
Until then, advocates and health professionals want anyone without current knowledge of their status to take advantage of a free test today and any day tests are offered.
“Anybody can get HIV whether you’re young or old, gay, straight black or white,” said Aletha Mayband, assistant commissioner of the New York City Health Department. “It is especially important for the African American and Latino communities to get tested since eight out of 10 new HIV cases occur among blacks and Latinos.”

Pregnant Women Should Not Handle Cat Litter
Pregnant Women Should Not Handle Cat Litter - Pregnant Women Should Not Handle Cat Litter | Pregnant women should not handle cat litter and they need to be aware that toxoplasmosis (TOX-so-plaz-MO-sis) can cause problems with pregnancy, including abortion. Due to the risk of toxoplasmosis, toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). This parasite is carried by cats and is present in its feces. While doing some basic research for the 1993 Cryptosporidium Outbreak article, I ran across a fact based determination regarding why pregnant women should not handle cat litter boxes. The short answer is, due to the risk of toxoplasmosis.
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). This parasite is carried by cats and is present in its feces. Cat ladies suicide,
If a woman who has not previously been infected with T. gondii becomes infected while she is pregnant, there is a significant chance that the organism will produce severe neurological damage in the developing fetus.
Not only pregnant women and their unborn babies are at risk, but T. gondii is also a special risk to folks receiving cancer or transplant therapy or individuals that are positive for HIV. define: cat lady,
Cats become infected by eating raw meat, usually mice, infected with T. gondii cysts. Cats will pass the oocysts in its feces. For approximately 3 to 15 days the cat will produce the oocyst-laden feces until purged and then cease being hazardous. University of Maryland School of Medicine,
An oocyst is the thick-walled spore phase of certain microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and Toxoplasma. Oocysts in cat feces are transferred to cat’s litter boxes. Pregnant women should avoid handling cat litter boxes since the oocysts can cause eye, brain and other damage to the developing fetus.
T. gondii oocysts hatch, multiply in the human host, and may invade a variety of tissues. In most individuals this process is benign, but in pregnant women or in immunosuppressed individuals, the damage can be significant.
Let’s not embark on a sky is falling approach, but appropriately assess the risk factors regarding your cat or neighboring cat: Pregnant Women Should Not Handle Cat Litter,
A household cat that may go outdoors and possibly eat raw meat is at a significant risk of being infected. The hunting may be sporadic, but it only takes one mouse.
Outdoor cats that visit your garden will likely infect your crops.
Indoor cats that are not exposed to rodents, not fed raw meat, or housed in a structure that rodents cannot access is obviously at a very low risk of infection.
The manner of transmission is from the animal contaminant to oral human ingestion. Therefore, it is very important that you do not stir up dust and/or aerosols from the cat litter and hands are thoroughly washed.
Note: It significantly lowers the risk of infection if the litter box is changed every day. The toxoplasma oocysts are not immediately infectious when they are shed, but will be with in 24-hours. It is highly recommended to assume that all cat feces are infected and that pregnant women NOT handle soiled cat litter.
It is also important to note that cat feces are NOT the only source of toxoplasmosis; in fact, most humans are infected by eating undercooked meat.
The best way for pregnant women and those that are immunocompromised to prevent infection is to:
Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat.
Peel and wash root crops thoroughly before eating them, or only grow vegetables that must be cooked.
Assume that any cat’s feces may carry toxoplasma oocysts.
Toxoplasmosis is considered to be the third leading cause of death attributed to food borne illness in the United States. More than 60 million folks carry the Toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. Women who have never been exposed to T. gondii, but who become exposed while pregnant are those whose infants are at the greatest risk.

Paula Deen Loses 30 Pounds
Paula Deen Loses 30 Pounds - Television food personality Paula Deen took a public relations bashing when she announced in January that she had Type 2 diabetes, in no small part because the style of cooking she had promoted her entire career was laden with the stuff that can lead to diabetes, and because she also announced a deal with diabetes drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk at the same time.Five months later, she's talking about how she's lost 30 pounds, and never once gives credit to the diabetes drug.
"I do think differently now" about food, Deen told People (she's on the magazine's cover this week). "I'm more aware."
Some of her favorite foods (such as mashed potatoes) have been replaced by others, such as Greek salads and baked fish. paula deen loses 30 pounds,
"It took me a couple of years to get to this point," Deen says, referring to the news she had known about her diabetes for more than two years before telling the public. "If you make a few small changes, they can add up to big results."

World's Most Expensive Beauty Cream $13000
World's Most Expensive Beauty Cream $13000 - Japanese beauty product maker Cle de Peau Beaute is releasing a moisturizer, La Creme, that will sell for more than $13,000 for a 50-gram jar (less than 2 ounces).
As Stylist Magazine notes, the luxury moisturizer is five times more expensive per gram than gold. Parent company Shisheido is releasing La Creme on September 21 to mark the company's 30th anniversary.
And while only three jars of the creme will be sold, the company has enlisted actress Amanda Seyfried to help promote the product. The moisturizer reportedly comes encased in 30 layers of crystal and will be housed in handmade jars topped with three platinum rings.
"We do not usually make limited editions of our products, but this is to mark a special occasion for the Cle de Peau Beaute line," spokesman Megumi Kinukawa said.
So would anyone actually spend $13,000 for a jar of moisturizer? A 2008 report from the YWCA found that American women spend $7 billion on makeup product annually, equaling about $100 a month per American woman.
"We hope it will appeal to our loyal customers and people who are interested in gorgeous brands," Kinukawa said.
Writing on the company's site, Cle de Peau Beaute says of Seyfried:
"As the exciting embodiment of luminous sophistication and natural radiance, Amanda Seyfried captures the very essence of Cle de Peau Beaute. She is pure of heart, vibrantly alive, and brings joy to the lives of others."

Teen Sleeps Two Months
Teen sleeps two months - Teen falls asleep for two months, stacey comerford misses exams, this sleepy schoolgirl missed her GCSEs after nodding off in April and waking up last week. Sleepy Stacey Comerford, 15, suffers from a rare neurological disorder which means she enters a sleeping state for months at a time. The last – her longest at TWO months – meant she missed NINE exams after being predicted straight As. Stacey, from Telford, Shropshire, is just one of 1,000 people worldwide to suffer from Kleine Levin Syndrome also known as Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. Stacey, who hopes to return to school part time, revealed she was taunted over the condition.
She said: “I’ve missed nine exams and my birthday in November. “It’s easier now people know what it is. It’s easier to explain to them. Before, people didn’t believe me. That was the hardest thing. “People would pull faces at school if I said I was tired and needed to go home.” During an episode she can sleep for 20 hours a day and only gets up in a trance-like state to sip water or use the loo. Mum Bernie Richards slips in some food to keep her alive before she makes it back to bed. kleine-levin syndrome, stacey comerford misses exams,
Stacey has lost nearly two stone because of the condition. Mum-of-six Bernie, 53, said: “There’s never any warning. I’ve even found her fast asleep on the kitchen floor. “When she’s in an episode, she might get up to go to the toilet or get a drink but she’s not awake. I call it sleep mode. “When she wakes, she thinks it’s the following day. She doesn’t have any memory of it.” Bernie compares her daughter to Jekyll and Hyde. She said: “It’s like having two different kids in the house. stacey comerford misses exams,
“When she’s in sleep mode she can be quite moody but she can’t help it. She’s like a toddler who wants to do things her own way. She stamps her foot if she doesn’t get what she wants.” Stacey began experiencing symptoms around a year ago but was only diagnosed in March. Doctors initially thought she was just being a typical moody teenager. But Bernie said: “All she wanted to do was sleep. “The GP said ‘I know it sounds awful but she looks like a moody, depressed teenager’.”
Fears then surfaced she might have a brain tumour but tests came back negative. The diagnosis finally came when she was seen by a neurologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. But Stacey still gets taunted about her condition. Bernie said: “She’s had that much stick off people. They don’t understand. “I was even investigated by the local education authority because Stacey’s school thought I was deliberately keeping her out of school. They’ve stopped now we’ve got a diagnosis. “I always knew there was something wrong.
I know my daughter. “She’s gone from a fresh faced teenager, full of energy to sleeping all the time. “She could go to sleep tonight and wake up next week.” There is no known cure for the syndrome but some suffers grow out of it

18 Million Cancer Survivors
18 Million Cancer Survivors - The number of cancer survivors living in the U.S. is expected to surge by one-third come 2022, 18 Million Cancer Survivors, with about 18 million people expected to survive the disease.
The "Cancer Treatment and Survivorship Facts and Figures" report finds that even though cancer incidence rates are decreasing, the number of survivors is growing due to the aging and growth of the population, as well as improved rates in cancer survival. Currently there an estimated 13.7 million people living in the United States who have survived cancer.
The report is the first of its kind collaboration from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. It's published in the June 14 issue of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
The report showed that in 2012, the three most common cancers among men with a history of the disease were prostate cancer (43 percent of male survivors), colorectal cancer (9 percent), and melanoma (7 percent). As for women, 41 percent of them had breast cancer at some point, 8 percent had uterine cancer, followed by 8 percent reporting that they had colon cancer. Those proportions are expected to be largely unchanged by 2022, the researchers said.
Other notable findings were that about 45 percent of cancer survivors are 70 or older, while only 5 percent are younger than 40 years old. The median age of a patient's diagnosis was 66.
However children are also affected: The report found there are 58,510 survivors of childhood cancer living in the U.S., and an additional 12,060 children will be diagnosed in 2012.
Most cancer survivors were diagnosed five or more years ago, with 15 percent of survivors having been diagnosed 20 or more years ago.
The report's authors say that this growing number makes it increasingly important that caregivers and health care providers better understand the unique medical and psychological needs of cancer survivors
"With this effort, we review the critical issues related to cancer treatment and survivorship," Dr. Elizabeth R. Ward, national vice president of intramural research at the American Cancer Society and senior author of the report, said in a news release. "Many survivors, even among those who are cancer free, must cope with the long-term effects of treatment, as well as psychological concerns such as fear of recurrence. As more people survive cancer, it is vital that health care providers are aware of the special needs of cancer patients and caregivers."
HealthPop reported on a recent study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting in April found cancer survivors face a new set of risks after surviving the disease, with almost half of them expected to die of another chronic disease. Cardiovascular disease was the main cause of non-cancer death.
Also in April, the American Cancer Society released a new set of guidelines urging cancer survivors to exercise and eat healthier because it could help prevent the cancer from coming back.
The last five years saw more than 100 studies involving cancer survivors, HealthPop reported, many of them finding that exercise and/or a healthy diet was associated with lower cancer recurrence rates and longer survival.

Cannabis Without High
Cannabis Without High - Scientists invent 'cannabis without the high', Marijuana Compound Treats Schizophrenia, Israeli scientists have cultivated a cannabis plant that doesn't get people stoned in a development that may help those smoking marijuana for medical purposes, a newspaper said on Wednesday.
According to the Maariv daily, the new cannabis looks, smells and even tastes the same, but does not induce any of the feelings normally associated with smoking marijuana that are brought on by the substance THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. cannabis without high, Tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, Marijuana Compound Treats Schizophrenia,
"It has the same scent, shape and taste as the original plant -- it's all the same -- but the numbing sensation that users are accustomed to has disappeared," said Tzahi Klein, head of development at Tikkun Olam, the firm that developed the species.
"Many of our patients who tried the new plant come back to us and say: 'You tricked me,'" because they assumed they had been given a placebo, he said.
According to Maariv, Tikkun Olam sought to neutralise the effect of the THC and to increase the effect of another substance called CBD, or cannabidiol, which has been shown to help diabetics and to ease various psychiatric disorders.
Not only does it leave users stone-cold sober, it also doesn't induce the munchies, the hunger pangs that the drug's smokers generally suffer.
Despite the innovation, it is unlikely to have any impact on Israeli law, which outlaws the use of marijuana as illegal except for medical purposes.
According to figures published earlier this year by Sheba Medical Centre and the Israel Cancer Association, medical marijuana has been approved for use by about 6,000 Israelis suffering from various illnesses.

Medieval Medical Treatments
Medieval Medical Treatments - Medieval times + Middle Ages + 5th to 15th centuries, Many of the most disturbing medical practices in history originated in medieval times or earlier, before physicians and their patients knew any better. And some are still in practice today. If you think the worst thing ever to happen in the name of good health was the insurance industry, read on.
Maggot Therapy
Should you ever find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having decaying flesh on your body, don't worry. You can always drop a handful of maggots into the wound.
How do maggots help heal wounds? maggots are used to eat dead tissue,
The history: Maggot therapy stretches back to biblical times, though it was in the 1500s that a French surgeon first formally recorded the therapeutic effects of fly larvae. He was astute enough to notice a large number of maggots emerging from a hole in a patient's skull, and attributed the patient's recovery to the larvae's preferred diet. He was right, too, and larval therapy remains FDA-approved today for cleansing certain types of wounds.
What is the cleansing process known as? maggot debridement therapy,
When you're all healed, ask your doctor if you can hold on to your maggots. Find out in which hobby/sport they can be used. maggots for fishing bait,
Metal Catheter
Urinary catheterization is no walk in the park today, but in the old days it was more like a trip down a dark alley.
The history: Urinary blockages in men were treated by inserting a metal tube into the tip of the penis and guiding the tube ever so painfully inward until it reached the bladder, at which point urine could pass through the tube and out of the body. The bronze tubes were S-shaped through about the ninth century, when moderately less sadistic catheters made of gold, silver or copper had a rounded tip and only one bend to follow the curvature of the urethra.
Popular procedure: Catheterization was widely used to relieve blockages caused by venereal disease, which means the bent rod was passing through a urethra that was already sore and tender from infection.
Clyster
The history: Though having hot fluids jetted into one's bum may seem a little undignified to some, the enema of yore was long favored by aristocrats and noblemen for the treatment of various bowel conditions.
The procedure: Long before plastic tubes and rubber bulbs softened the experience, water or other liquid preparations were injected with a clyster, which looked like a giant metal syringe and functioned something like a bicycle pump. After a metal nozzle with holes around the tip was gingerly inserted, a plunger was depressed by a helpful friend, sending the contents of the clyster rapidly upstream toward the colon.
Royal flush: King Louis XIV of France king louis xiv The Sun King, is said to have withstood, or perhaps enjoyed, more than 2,000 enemas during his reign, sometimes while holding public court.
Lobotomy
The history: The fun thing about a lobotomy was that the neurological procedure was administered with an ice pick and a hammer. It was in not the Middle Ages but the mid-20th century that this treatment for psychiatric disorders reached its apex. psychiatric disorders include depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder,
The procedure: The first transorbital lobotomy was performed in 1945 utilizing a technique practiced on a grapefruit. The objective of the procedure was to detach the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain, achieved by inserting an ice pick at the top of the eye socket, tapping it with a mallet and then swishing the pick back and forth to sever the connective brain tissue. A lobotomy could be conducted as an office procedure, saving patients the nuisance of a hospital stay. transorbital lobotomy definition, walter freeman lobotomist, brain frontal lobe controls emotions and personality including attention, short-term memory,
Bloodletting
The history: In medieval times, medical theory was based on the concept that four humours controlled wellness. Illness signified that the humours were imbalanced — a problem handily addressed by removing large quantities of blood. barber pole symbolizes bloodletting + red for blood, white for tourniquet,
The procedure: In the procedure known as venesection, blood was drained by opening a vein on the forearm with a tool called a fleam, which was about the size of a chopstick and had a small blade for penetrating the flesh, plus a channel into which the blood would flow. The fleam sent the blood into a bowl for measuring. Leeches were also used for bloodletting, though it was harder to measure how much blood has been sucked by each swollen worm. barber pole symbolizes bloodletting + red for blood, white for tourniquet,
Saw Amputation & Cauterization
The procedure: When a limb just had to go, physicians used to go at an arm or leg with a curved knife, a bone saw or a saw like the kind used for lopping branches from a tree.
Dulling the pain: One account from the 17th century describes a patient's being given a small alcoholic drink then being held down by at least three assistants while the doctor went about the dismembering. The resulting wound would then be closed by burning it with a red-hot cautery, an iron instrument similar to those used to brand cattle.
Cauterized hemorrhoids
Are you sitting down? Had you been treated for hemorrhoids in the Middle Ages, you might have wanted to remain standing a good long time. St. Fiacre patron saint of venereal diseases,
The procedure: Another use of cautery irons was to reduce and seal hemorrhoids, the condition known at the time as St. Fiacre's curse, since Fiacre was believed to have cured his own pain in the rear by sitting on a stone in his garden. Hippocrates suggested that the inflamed anal veins could be relieved by plucking them out with the fingernails.
Tapeworm Diet
The history: Why eat right and stay active when you could just swallow some parasites and let them do the work? Tapeworm pills were marketed for weight loss in the early 21st century tapeworm diet pills banned by FDA, though their effectiveness — and whether they contained living tapeworm eggs — is unverified. tapeworm diet pills banned by FDA,
How it works: Certainly a tapeworm infection can cause weight loss when the worms grow large enough to block intestinal passageways. So, before eating some raw pork and hoping for the best, consider 10 minutes on a treadmill. tapeworm can cause seizures, dementia, cysts, meningitis and organ death, Heart worms, tape worms and whip worms,
Mercury
It took a long time for man to understand that mercury works great in a thermometer but not so well in the bloodstream. Mercury poisoning can have serious and often deadly side effects. mercury poisoning can cause lung and kidney damage, intestinal bleeding, blindness, seizures,
The history: In the third and fourth centuries, mercury was used to treat trachoma, venereal disease and other conditions, but by the ninth century people had grown wary enough to test its toxicity on animals. mercury known as quicksilver,
The use of mercury was later relegated to topical applications, though the risks were still evident. Despite warnings from the FDA, mercury is still used in cosmetics today. Minnesota is first state to ban mercury in cosmetics,

Trepanation
The history: Trepanning is the practice of opening the skull to get inside a patient's head. Archeologists have found trepanned skulls with holes made by scraping the bone away with sharp stones, suggesting that even in prehistoric times man had a sense that behavior was based in the brain.
The practice: In medieval times, drills and saws were used to create a window through the skull — methods not so far afield from the approaches used in modern craniotomies.

Go Red for Women Friday
Go Red for Women Friday - Whether you're working or not, put on some red Friday. Not only will you stand out against all the white snow, you'll be saying something about heart disease.
Friday is National Wear Red Day. The day was created because more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined.
Carrie Lehtonen says she was 31 when she had her heart attack. She was on a bike ride - traveling 150 miles in two days.
She thought she was feeling bad because of the exercise and it taught her an important lesson.
"Really listen to your body. I was very fortunate that I was with friends that insisted I go to the hospital cause if I had been home by myself and I wouldn't have thought anything of it being related to my heart and I wouldn't have gone to the hospital. So I think it's really important for people to listen to their body," she said.
Symptoms of a heart attack are often different for women compared to men. Go Red for Women encourages women to educate themselves and their families.
The American Heart Association estimates one woman dies every minute from heart disease.

Sausage Bacon Cancer
Sausage Bacon Cancer - Eating two rashers of bacon a day can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 19% and the risk goes up if a person eats more, experts have said.
Eating 50g of processed meat every day – the equivalent to one sausage or two rashers of bacon – increases the risk by 19%, compared to people who do not eat processed meat at all.
For people consuming double this amount of processed meat (100g), the increased risk jumps to 38%, and is 57% for those eating 150g a day. But experts cautioned that the overall risk of pancreatic cancer was relatively low – in the UK, the lifetime risk of developing the disease is one in 77 for men and one in 79 for women.
Nevertheless, the disease is deadly – it is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage and kills 80% of people in under a year. Only 5% of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis.
The latest study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, is from researchers at the respected Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. They examined data from 11 studies, including 6,643 cases of pancreatic cancer. They found inconclusive evidence on the risks of eating red meat overall, compared to eating no red meat.
They found a 29% increase in pancreatic cancer risk for men eating 120g per day of red meat but no increased risk among women. This may be because men in the study tended to eat more red meat than women.
They concluded: "Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that processed meat consumption is positively associated with pancreatic cancer risk.
"Red meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in men.
"Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings."
The study adds to understanding about the risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer. Overall, smoking is thought to account for around a third of all cases of the disease, and smokers have a 74% increased risk of developing it compared to non-smokers.
Associate Professor Susanna Larsson, author on the study, said: "Pancreatic cancer has poor survival rates. So as well as diagnosing it early, it's important to understand what can increase the risk of this disease.
"If diet does affect pancreatic cancer then this could influence public health campaigns to help reduce the number of cases of this disease developing in the first place."
Around 8,090 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK in 2008 – 3% of all cancer cases – and around 7,780 people died from it. Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, said: "The jury is still out as to whether meat is a definite risk factor for pancreatic cancer and more large studies are needed to confirm this. But this new analysis suggests processed meat may be playing a role.
"We do know that, among lifestyle factors, smoking significantly ramps up the risk of pancreatic cancer.
"Stopping smoking is the best way to reduce your chances of developing many types of cancer and other diseases as well."
Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at World Cancer Research Fund, said: "There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk of pancreatic cancer and this study may be an early indication of another factor behind the disease.
"Regardless of this latest research, we have already established a strong link between eating red and processed meat and your chances of developing bowel cancer, which is why WCRF [World Cancer Research Fund] recommends limiting intake of red meat to 500g cooked weight a week and avoiding processed meat altogether."
Alex Ford, chief executive of Pancreatic Cancer UK, said: "Pancreatic Cancer UK is keen to see more research like this that helps improve our understanding about which aspects of diet and lifestyle may have a bearing on the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
"These findings, if confirmed by further studies, could help inform people on which lifestyle factors could play a role in limiting their chances of developing the disease."

"These findings, if confirmed by further studies, could help inform people on which lifestyle factors could play a role in limiting their chances of developing the disease."

Dash Diet 2012
Dash Diet 2012 - The best diet of 2012 is the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, according to new rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.
This is the second year in a row the DASH diet, which aims to prevent and lower high blood pressure, has won the category of "best diet overall."
"While it may have started as a [blood pressure] lowering diet, it really has incredible nutritional value," said Deborah Enos, a certified nutritionist in Seattle and a MyHealthNewsDaily contributor.
Second place was won by the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes diet, which aims to lower cholesterol, and third place went to the Mayo Clinic diet, which focuses on weight loss.
"TLC is another example of a wonderful 'medical' type of diet that has gone mainstream," Enos said. But while it's low sodium requirement means it boosts heart health, it may be difficult for some to follow.
The U.S. News & World Report description of the diet's strengths and weaknesses noted that "The TLC diet takes work and a certain aptitude for reading nutrition labels."
"The easy-to-follow aspect is almost more important than the weight lost on a program," Enos said. Her clients, she said, have a difficult time sticking with diets that are hard to follow. "Now, for my clients who need to lower their cholesterol levels, this is an amazing and necessary diet for them to consider."
The rankings were decided by a panel of 22 experts in diet, nutrition, obesity, food psychology, diabetes and heart disease, according to the magazine's website. The experts rated the 25 diets in seven categories: how easy the diets are to follow, their ability to produce short-term and long-term weight loss, nutritional completeness, safety and potential for preventing and managing diabetes and heart disease.
Best diets for weight loss
The top three diets for weight loss are the Weight Watchers diet, the Biggest Loser diet and the Jenny Craig diet, according to the rankings.
"The data show that dieters had the best luck with Weight Watchers for both short and long term weight loss," and the diet ranked highly in terms of how easy it was to follow, Enos said. "The Weight Watchers plan is also the diet that people most often return to — it appears in the article, and in my own experience, to be the diet that people really refer back to over their lifetime."
The experts rated the Weight Watchers diet as a 3.7 out of 5 in the category of easy to follow, whereas the Biggest Loser diet scored a 2.9 in this category, according to the rankings. The Jenny Craig diet scored a 3.6, but fared less well than Weight Watchers in terms of its ability to produce weight loss.
"Let’s face the facts of our busy lives, if a program isn’t easy to follow, we probably won’t," Enos said.
Weight Watchers won the category of best commercial diet plan, edging out the Jenny Craig diet, which relied too heavily on packaged meals and came with a high cost, according to the rankings.
However, when Consumer Reports released its ratings of commercial diet plans in May, Jenny Craig ranked as the winner. Those raters acknowledged criticisms that the diet is hard to follow, but cited a two-year study of 332 people showing that 92 percent of participants stuck with the diet. That study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010.
Best diets for healthy eating
The DASH and TLC diets topped the category of best diets for healthy eating, which emphasized nutrional completeness and safety. The Mediterranean diet ranked third.
The data show that the DASH diet offers the best overall nutrition, Enos said. "It has one of the highest levels of B-12 and potassium," she noted, whereas the Weight Watchers plan is low in those nutrients, and recommends that its followers take a multivitamin.
The DASH diet prescribes the number of servings of grains, vegetables, dairy and other food types that a person should eat daily, based on their calorie needs. It suggests high amounts of fiber, potassium and magnesium, and keeps sweets to a minimum.
The diet caps salt intake to the recommended daily values —1,500 milligrams for people who are age 51 or older, African-American, or have hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease; 2,300 milligrams for everyone else.
The DASH diet also won in the category of best diabetes diets, while the Ornish diet, which focuses on low fat intake and emphasizes exercise and stress management, won for best heart-healthy diet.
Pass it on: One panel has decided the best diet of 2012 is the DASH diet, which emphasizes consuming lean protein, fruits and vegetables.

Dash diet 2012
Dash diet 2012 - DASH diet ranked best for 2012, +dash diet eating plan, For the second year in a row the DASH diet has been ranked as the best overall diet.
Although the DASH diet is not geared toward dropping pounds, dash diet 2012, doctors say it still has an incredible amount of nutritional value.
Beating out Weight Watchers and the Ornish diet, DASH claimed first place for healthy eating and was ranked the best diabetes dietas well. dash diet 2012,
But if the DASH Diet is one of the best weight-loss plans in America, why have so few people heard of it? What does it do? Does it have a "catch," like the fatigue and mild malnutrition sometimes seen in Atkins dieters? +dash diet eating plan,
Find out the answers to these and more with a rundown of what to know about the new health plan. From how to get started and what steps to follow, to how it's emphasis on healthy eating may not always lead to weight loss, here are five things dieters should know about the DASH Diet. therapeutic lifestyle changes diet,
1. The Basics of the DASH Diet
The DASH health plan actually began as a way to lower blood pressure: people were encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables, cut back on meat and fats, and incorporate blood pressure-fighters into their systems.
By designing the diet to have a calorie deficit, however, DASH can also be used as a weight loss program, and has taken off as one this year in the U.S. therapeutic lifestyle changes diet,
The diet requires you to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as a good amount of low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fish or poultry, and nuts. In exchange, the diet advises steep cuts in foods high in fat and cholesterol as well as red meat, sweets and salt.
In addition to these food pyramid basics, however, DASH dieters must also add foods rich in what the program calls "nutrients of concern," things like calcium and fiber that are often lacking in an average American's diet.
The DASH "Nutrients of Concern" are fiber for digestion, potassium for lower blood pressure and decreasing bone loss, calcium for strong bones, blood vessels and muscles, vitamin B-12 for cell metabolism, and vitamin D for regulating calcium and phosphates in your body.
While DASH doesn't offer a tailored exercise plan, it does offer advice for all levels and fitness goals, according to its web site DASH for Health, and encourages a steadily more active lifestyle.
2. It's Easy to Get Started...
The DASH Diet book has been praised by dieticians and everyday calorie counters as an easy program to understand.
"The DASH Diet is sensible, healthy and effective," one dieter gushed on the web site's reader feedback section. "The book is easy to read, understand and follow."
Another reviewer praised the book for showing portion sizes for different calorie levels, something she'd struggled with in the past. "This was the first diet that made any sense," she wrote.
Nor do potential dieters need to shell out cash for "The DASH Diet Action Plan," pioneered by Dr. Marla Heller. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), which helped create the program, is offering free guides at 64 (PDF here) and just six (PDF here) pages in length, calculating what dieters should eat and their what their daily calorie count should be based on their age and exercise level.
3. ... And Harder to Stick To (or Afford).
The tricky thing about diet that actually work on changing people's relationship with food is that making those changes are a lot easier said than done.
Although DASH doesn't use a "points" system like rival Weight Watchers, it still demands changes to dieters' routines that aren't easy fixes and require a lot of effort to stick to day by day.
Take, for example, May Clinic's guide to using DASH guidelines while shopping. In addition to detailed lists at the start of each week, including planning out meals, drinks and snacks, shoppers must also scour nutrition labels for calories, fat content, vitamins and minerals and protein. No pre-made meals or free weekly deliveries here.
But beyond the grunt work, there's also an issue of price. For dieters or simply those looking to get healthy, buying almost everything fresh and organic can be a big strain on a budget. Even when dining out at restaurants, the complications (and sometimes upped cost) of ordering a healthy meal can end up undoing much of the joy associated with having someone else cook for you.
In the U.S. poll, the diet scored lower for its work load and price tag, despite scoring 4.1 out of 5 overall.
4. DASH is Easy to Customize
What it lacks in initial ease, however, it more than makes up for in variety. The DASH Diet itself emphasizes color, texture and flavor variety simply by the ingredients it pushes. And in contrast to other health programs, this one's easily customizable for Kosher, Halal or gluten-free diets, as well as followers who are vegetarian or vegan.
In fact, according to its web site, the original DASH Diet was modeled off of a vegetarian lifestyle, since vegetarians tend to consume less salt and have lower blood sugars than omnivores.
5. It's a Health Diet, Not a Weight Loss Diet
The DASH Diet is undeniably the healthiest program out there. In addition to moderate weight loss and lowered blood pressure, DASH may also help lower cholestoral, according to a 2008 study from the Archives of Internal Medicine, which found the diet was associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in women who had reached middle age.
The 22-person volunteer panel that chose DASH as the best diet of 2012 also looked at its ability to generate long-term and short-term weight loss, with favorable results. The diet plan has no known health risks and appears to yield manifold health benefits.
The important thing to remember, however, is that the DASH Diet was not designed primarily or initially as a weight loss program, and that those who are looking to shed major pounds should take a long-term view of the program.
Because DASH rejects the idea of low-carb diets and puts its emphasis on exercise and changing people's view of their food, the results of a weight loss plan will take longer (though likely be more lasting) than a liquid diet, Atkins or pre-prepared meals from other programs.
Too, the program's recommended foods need to be followed according to their recommended servings in order for the program to actually work. Scarfing down a few more fruits and vegetables won't rock the boat too much, but eating a lot of cashews and almonds because the program encourages eating nuts might tip your calorie count for the day, even if the food is healthy.
